Apple Wallet’s new Digital ID feature

When you create your digital ID using your passport in Apple Wallet, you can easily and securely present it at TSA checkpoints, in apps, and online.

Following the new iPhone-era requirements that went into effect in Texas today, there’s a new way to use the state’s Wallet app’s digital ID feature.

According to a new support document: Age Requirements for Managing an Apple Account in the United States (Texas). Here’s an excerpt:

Due to Texas law, these age requirements will apply to new Apple accounts created in Texas on or after June 4, 2026:

Adults must be 18 years of age or older to use certain services or features or to take certain actions on their account. Learn how to verify that you are an adult.

If you’re under 18, you must be part of a Family Sharing group.

That first bullet point is where the digital ID specifically comes into play.

Create a Digital ID

You can create a Digital ID by opening the Wallet app, then:

  1. Hitting the plus button in the top-right corner
  2. Selecting ‘Driver’s License and ID Cards’
  3. Hitting ‘Digital ID’ at the top, then authenticating with a US passport

If similar legislation passes in other states, we should expect to see Digital ID continue to be supported as a privacy-friendly age-verification method in each new state.

Apple Wallet ID Support Coming to Arkansas

Apple previously announced that Arkansas is one of the states that plans to support Apple Wallet driver’s licenses and state ID cards. The state launched Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet support last year, and now it’s making good on its Apple Wallet promise.

Arkansas today announced the launch of Apple Wallet on its Department of Finance and Administration website. The feature is now live in the Wallet app. If you still don’t see it, try force quitting the Wallet app and checking again.

With the addition of Arkansas, Apple Wallet driver’s license support is now available in the following locations:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • Montana
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Puerto Rico
  • West Virginia

You can add your driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet by tapping the “+” button in the top right corner of the app. Apple Wallet will then add the ID and guide you through verifying your identity.

You can then use your digital driver’s license in person, in the app, and at TSA checkpoints, as well as at select businesses and organizations online. It does not replace your physical license.

The state of Arkansas says:

“The ID in Apple Wallet does not replace your physical driver’s license or ID card, and you should carry your physical card with you. The ID in Apple Wallet is voluntary and serves as a convenient, private, and secure companion to your physical, plastic driver’s license/ID card.”

Apple Wallet support for ID expanding to additional states isn’t as prominent as it once was. Last year, Apple introduced a new digital ID feature powered by your U.S. passport. This means anyone with a passport can create a digital ID in Apple Wallet, regardless of whether their state supports the feature.

How to create a digital ID on your iPhone and Apple Watch

On your iPhone, open the Wallet app.

  • Tap the Add Card button.
  • Tap Driver’s License or ID Cards. Then tap Digital ID.
  • Choose whether you want to add your digital ID to your iPhone only or to both your iPhone and paired Apple Watch.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to scan the machine-readable portion of your passport photo page. Use a well-lit area and a plain background. Make sure your image is clear and in focus before submitting.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to read the passport chip using your iPhone. Place your iPhone over the chip as instructed by the on-screen instructions.
  • After the passport chip is read, you’ll be asked to take a selfie to prove it’s you.
  • When you’re ready to submit your information, authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you use an accessibility feature, instead of having Face ID or Touch ID turned on, you can set it up with your passcode and then use your passcode or ID. Accessibility features include Voice Control, Switch Control, or AssistiveTouch.

Your digital ID can be presented at TSA checkpoints and at select businesses and organizations for identity verification purposes before boarding domestic flights to verify your age or identity in person, in apps, and online.
